“Smart stewardship” – How do info-communication technologies change agriculture?
It is almost boring that info-communication technologies penetrate in all industries and this trend is getting always stronger. Maybe agriculture is one of the most “traditional” sectors – and yet – experts think is an indisputable fact that stakeholders have to accept that info-communication technologies will have basic role in increasing efficiency of agriculture especially with the decreasing amounts of area based subsidies.
It is another important question which are the exact areas of agriculture and country development where the extensive and diverse tools and assets of information technology can be used to improve equal chances of people living in the countryside?
Each and every farmer will be forced to be very efficient and economical in watering, fertilizing or seeding after year 2020. It is obvious, but! If want to improve efficiency we need to have measured data, we need to forward them and systematically process them – moreover in massive quantities. Therefore, the question is raised: what technology platforms are necessary for this? We cannot disregard that corporate IT goes up in the clod intensively. It means that the managing entities do not need infrastructure, organizations system managers on their own, they buy it as a service. If it is true we are arrived in the world of Big Data / Internet-Of-Things and we have fundamental need for efficient Machine-to-Machine communication. More simply; the moment is not very far when it will not be the farmer who activates the watering system. The activator will be an algorithm after processing relevant data measured by sensors.
Nevertheless, info-communication technology solutions are in pupilage in agriculture for now. We are still before introduction of new knowledge bases, knowledge based systems, community applications. It would not only mean the development of the sector but it would bring significant changes in the life of each individual and it would support the work of people on the countryside on every day level, and support integrating them in market economy.
All these motives made us to decide to dedicate a specific section to agriculture on an infocommunication event.
We would like to present how info-communication technologies can serve agriculture and countryside development today and we would like to give you insight of the current status of agriculture-IT in the world and how we can adapt its results in Hungarian environment.
